End Stage Liver Disease (ESLD)
What is end stage liver disease (ESLD)?
When significant functional (more than 75 – 80%) liver tissue is damaged due to diseases it is called end stage liver disease (ESLD) or cirrhosis. Drugs cannot reverse the damage done to it. In ESLD liver looses capacity to re-grow/ regenerate. As of now there is no remedy to cure end stage liver diseases and transplant is the only available treatment option. The only solution is to replace the poorly functioning liver with functioning healthy part of liver from a dead or live person which is essential for life.
What is the role of drugs / medication in ESLD patients?
There are no magic or wonder drugs available for liver diseases. The very fact that liver cirrhosis or ESLD is not reversible and functioning tissue is replaced by non functioning scar tissue, drugs are not useful to reverse damage done to liver.
Cirrhosis is a progressive disease. Drugs do not treat the disease, however it is useful in treating the effects or manifestations of the disease like mental changes, fluid in abdomen, bleeding from stomach or infection of abdominal fluid and. Besides, as the disease progresses, drugs fail to treat these effects adequately. Therefore, liver transplant is the last resort to treat cirrhosis or ESLD.
